Prohibition "The Noble Experiment"

Dubbed "The Noble Experiment", big daddy government tried to prevent it's good citizens from embibing in the evils of alcohol. The resulting change was that a whole lot of criminals got rich selling cheap, low grade, rot gut alcohol. Fortunately it only lasted from 1920 - 1933. Why you ask would the government do something that we can clearly see is so stupid now? Pressure from a special interest group called the "Temperance Movement", who believed that prohibiting the consumption of alcohol would solve certain social issues and promote a good clean "Christian" lifestyle. Guess they enjoyed forcing people to "do the right thing" back then too. Here's some fun pics from the era:
