I'm sure many of you have been watching the exciting new HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Set in 1920's prohibition era Atlantic City, one reoccurring character is WWI vet Richard "Half Face" Harrow. Inspiration for his disfigurement comes directly from history itself. Prosthetic masks were used in lieu of plastic surgery to hide many veteran's facial disfigurements. We call them "Gueules cassées" (Broken Faces) in French... Otto Dix painted numerous artworks of them.
